Note that only about 72% of this book is new - the remainder is a reprint of a previously published novel. I've been reading Susan Mallery books for years and would never have guessed she would be an author who would pad her page count by including a "bonus" book (previously published and probably previously read by her loyal readers) without disclosing that fact in the description of the book.Besides the padded pages, the story was so-so. Jasper thinks he has issues, but Renee has issues about so many things it detracts from the story. Oh, almost forgot about the "psychic" - I know there are romance books that include psychic/supernatural characters (and I read some of them), but that is not what I was expecting in a Susan Mallery book.I hope this book isn't a prediction of the type of books we will be seeing from Susan Mallery from here on out. I won't be pre-ordering her books anymore without reading reviews. Normally, I really love books by Susan Mallery, but not in this particular case. It's one of those novels I keep putting down again after only reading it for a few minutes. I just can't get into the lead characters and I totally agree with others who also gave it only one star. I, too, don't like the too much graphic sex and not enough real relationship she went with here, and it isn't like Susan to write like that. I agree too that sticking a novella in there which was originally published in 2017 is just plain wrong.I hadn't already read that eBook but others have and that's just not fair to the readers. Now having said that, I have to point out that this seems to be the thing these days with books published by Harlequin...not my favorite publisher to begin with. I have read a few other novels lately, that they published, in which there were short stories at the end which were already a few years old. Ripoff!Harlequin also rips you off page-wise because they are misleading. No story ever starts on page 1...try page 9 or page 7. I don't like it when blank pages and title pages "start" the book with "page 1." A story should start on page one WITH the actual story! So if you're looking at Amazon and reading about a book you want to buy, realize if it's by Harlequin that it won't actually have the number of pages they claim it does. And if they add a short story at the end, or especially if that story is a "read ahead for a sneak preview of such and such upcoming novel" they will count that as pages in the book and they shouldn't. Other publishers do that as well.Oh, and realize that "HQ" is the trademark for Harlequin now. Maybe they think they're hiding that way. Most of their books are horribly skinny to begin with. And I agree with the person who said she hoped this novel (meaning the story) wasn't the way Susan Mallery's books were going to go from now on. Ugh, please, no.
